How CVMatch Works

CVMatch reads the job description you paste, extracts the skills, keywords, requirements and tone, then compares them against your uploaded CV. It identifies gaps, calculates a 0–100 match score, and rewrites your CV in the employer's language. Every output should be reviewed before you apply.

What CVMatch analyses in the job description

When you paste a job description, CVMatch extracts four things: hard skills (tools, certifications, languages), soft skills (leadership, communication, stakeholder management), required experience (years, sector, seniority), and the vocabulary the employer uses to describe the role.

It treats the job description as the brief, not a checklist. If the advert says "project management" but your CV says "programme delivery", that is flagged as a language gap even though the underlying skill may be the same.

How it identifies keywords, skills, requirements and gaps

CVMatch compares the extracted job requirements with the content of your CV. It looks for exact keyword matches, related synonyms with lower weighting, and evidence that a skill is backed by an achievement or outcome.

A gap is anything the job description asks for that your CV does not clearly demonstrate. Gaps are grouped into skills you genuinely lack and language differences you can fix by rewriting bullets. This is presented as a numbered list you can act on.

What the match score means

The match score is a number from 0 to 100. It reflects how closely your CV aligns with the job description based on keyword overlap, required skills coverage, job-title relevance, and how strongly your recent roles map to the target role.

Above 80 is a strong fit. Between 60 and 80 is a reasonable fit that usually benefits from a rewrite. Below 60 suggests either the role is a stretch or the CV needs significant adjustment. The score updates after each rewrite so you can see the improvement.

What the match score does not mean

The score does not guarantee an interview. It does not predict recruiter behaviour. It does not account for networking, referrals, or how competitive the applicant pool is. It is a diagnostic tool, not a promise.

Different employers configure their ATS differently. A score of 87 on CVMatch might rank third in one system and tenth in another. Use the score to improve your CV, not to decide whether to apply.

How CV rewrites should be reviewed by you

CVMatch rewrites your personal statement, skills section and three to five key bullets to mirror the employer's language. The AI can occasionally misinterpret a role, overstate a skill, or use phrasing that does not sound like you.

Read every line. Check that each claim is true. Adjust the tone to your voice. Remove anything that feels inflated. The rewrite is a strong first draft, not a finished submission.

How CV data is stored and deleted

Your CV, job description and generated outputs are stored in your account so you can return to them. They live in a UK/EU-managed database with row-level security. Only your account can access them.

A practical example

Rohit uploads his CV and pastes a Senior Business Analyst job description from a FTSE 250 company. CVMatch flags that the advert mentions "stakeholder management", "SQL", "Agile" and "data visualisation".

His CV only mentions "client liaison", "databases" and "waterfall projects". The match score is 61. CVMatch rewrites three bullets to use "stakeholder management", "SQL reporting" and "Agile sprints", adds a short skills line for "Tableau and Power BI data visualisation", and clarifies that his "client liaison" covered 20+ cross-functional stakeholders.

The new score is 84. Rohit reviews the rewrite, trims one overly strong phrase, and applies.

Does CVMatch guarantee interviews?
No. CVMatch improves your CV's alignment with a job description, which can raise your chances of clearing an initial ATS filter. It does not guarantee interviews, job offers, or any specific outcome.
Is my CV kept permanently?
Your CV is stored in your account so you can return to it. You can delete individual optimisations or your whole account at any time. See our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service for full detail.
How accurate is the match score?
The score reflects keyword, skill and experience overlap. It is directionally accurate and useful for spotting gaps, but every employer's ATS is configured differently, so treat it as a guide.
Can I trust the AI rewrite?
The rewrite is generated by Claude (Anthropic) and is usually accurate, but you must review it. Check every claim, adjust the tone, and remove anything that does not sound like you or overstates your experience.
What happens to my data?
CV data is processed server-side via our secure backend and sent to Anthropic for generation. Anthropic does not train on your data. We do not sell your data. Full details are in the Privacy Policy.
